Season 2026/27 looks like it'll be one of our best ever.  Don't short-change yourself: join up now!

Season 2026/27 Pointscore

Our Wednesday pointscore competition has commenced and there were strong numbers across most groups at our first meet.  Attendance was so high that we've already had to tweak some of the divisions for the night to continue to run efficiently.  With numbers likely still to peak, more substantial changes may become necessary.

Remember to check the program posted to our Facebook group on the Sunday before each meet, so you know which events are scheduled.

Why has our pointscore competition proven even more popular this season?  Maybe because there are plenty of opportunities to win prizes!

Run Havoc $100 Voucher Giveaways

We are pleased to welcome back Run Havoc as a club sponsor.  They are Wollongong's running store destination, stocking a premium range of shoes, apparel and nutrition.  Check them out in the lower mall, or online at runhavoc.com.au.

Each month there will be two $100 Run Havoc vouchers up for grabs:

  • 'Participation' voucher winners will be determined by lucky draw, with members earning an entry each time they participate in a club event.  Volunteers conducting events will also receive a Participation entry: just enter your name in the space on the event recording sheet (note that you can still only receive one entry per event).
  • 'Achievement' vouchers are awarded for the best performance in a nominated event each month.  These events will either be handicaps or performances will be age-scaled, giving everyone a chance to take out the win.

The schedule of 'Achievement' events is on the Competition page of the club website.  If you're an infrequent attendee of our club meets, make sure that you're there on one of the nights a Run Havoc Achievement voucher is up for grabs.

The first 'Achievement' event is on this Wednesday, with the running of the 800m.  The winner of the $100 Gift Voucher will be determined using age-scaling.

Age-scaling adjusts performances to account for how expected performance levels vary with age, recognising that a child's time, for example, won't be directly comparable to that of an adult.  We then use multi-event scoring to compare male and female performances in the same event, allowing everyone to compete for a single overall win.  While the system isn't an exact science, it provides a useful guide to performance quality and helps to level the playing field.

$100 cash up for grabs each week!

In addition to the above, each and every week of pointscore, $100 cash will be up for grabs!

This is thanks to new club sponsor Loan Wolf Home Loans, helping Australians find home loan solutions by comparing options from more than 40 lenders.  Whether you're buying your first home or looking to refinance, check them out at loanwolfhomeloans.com.au.

We'll mix things up each week, with the method for determining the winner announced in a post to our Facebook group each Wednesday.  The guiding principle?  Give an event a go and you'll have a fair shot at the money!  We'll also share weather updates, BBQ news and other meet information in the same post.

This week: $100 will go to whomever is closest to finishing their 200m in a whole second (i.e. a time ending in .00s).  No watches allowed!  And in case a tiebreak is required: under beats over, then faster beats slower, then older beats younger.

Best of luck!

React Facility Solutions

React Facility Solutions are another major supporter of our Wednesday meets, having generously donated $1,000 to the club to help cover running costs and support our athletes.

Locally owned and operated, React offers a range of services including residential cleaning, end-of-lease cleaning, lawn care, landscaping, and handyman and home maintenance services.  They also provide commercial cleaning and facility maintenance.  Whether you need a hand around the house or help maintaining a property, check them out at reactfacilitysolutions.com.au.

In recognition of their support, our weekly competition results are published as 'React Results'.  These posts detail the outcomes of our Wednesday pointscore meets and are shared in both our Facebook group and on the club website, alongside performances by members representing Athletics Wollongong at other competitions.

NSW Relay Championships - Expressions of Interest close November 1

The NSW State Relay Championships are one of the highlights of the athletics calendar, with teams competing across track and field events.  This season, the 8s–12s compete on Sunday, November 8, while the 13s–Masters take to the track from November 13–15.

To be eligible to represent Athletics Wollongong, you must hold an Open, Concession, Junior or appropriate Multi-Club membership.  Our 8s–11s are limited to the Little Athletics pathway, while those in the 12s can pursue that option as well as nominating for an AW team in the 13s.

Want to be part of a team?  Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by Sunday, November 1.  If you don't submit a form, we'll assume you're unavailable rather than waiting to be asked.

Some of our Committee members have volunteered to coordinate teams from the EOIs received.  While the aim is to give everyone who nominates an opportunity to compete, this may not always be possible depending on the number and combination of nominations received.

It's worth reaching out to other athletes you'd like to team up with, too.  The more you communicate and encourage others to nominate, the better your chances of getting a team together!

The club will handle team entries, at a cost of $50 per team.  Please only nominate if you're confident you can commit to competing, as teams can be difficult to reorganise at short notice.  You may not find out whether you've made a team until a week or so before the event.

We're also seeking volunteers to help deliver the championships.  Clubs have previously been required to provide one official for every four teams entered, with shifts typically lasting around three hours.  Duties are similar to those at our Wednesday meets, such as returning implements and raking pits.  If you're attending anyway, please consider putting your hand up to help!

Finally, if you'd like to have an opportunity to practice, AW's meet on November 11 is our 'Relay Night', featuring 4x100m and 4x200m races.  Round up your teammates and get them to come along for a run-through of those changes!

Treloar Shield

In addition to Athletics Wollongong's weekly meets, there are a wide variety of competitions held on weekends.  You can find these listed on the event calendar on the NSW Athletics website.

The main focus for athletes at this stage of the season is the Treloar Shield, a club-based pointscore competition held over six rounds before culminating in a final for the top-scoring clubs.  Last season, AW won silver in the 50+ Masters category.

Some rounds have the same program offered at multiple venues.  Athletes are welcome to compete at either, but we've nominated a preferred venue for each round to help ensure the biggest possible AW cheer squad!

There may be entry caps at individual venues to encourage a more even spread of athletes.  Members are encouraged to enter early to avoid missing out on their preferred venue and having to compete elsewhere.  This is particularly relevant for Round 5, where the alternate venue is Mingara on the Central Coast.

Helpers can earn points for AW, too! Each round's entry page includes a Volunteer Sign Up button, where you can nominate an event in which to assist the accredited officials.  Volunteers earn points for the club in every age group AW contests in that round.  Those extra points could make all the difference in securing our place in the final!

South Coast Highlands Zone Championships

You can now register for the South Coast Highlands Zone Championships, to be held at Beaton Park on the weekend of November 29–30.

If you are in the 12s or under, you can only contest these Championships through a Little Athletics membership.

For athletes in the 13s, 14s and 15s age groups, these Championships provide one pathway to State.  Finish in the top three at Zone to qualify for the Region Championships, which will be held in Wagga in early February.  The top two at Region then qualify for State.

There is also a next best qualifier pathway to State.  Athletes who haven't qualified through placings at Zone or Region can still make it based on their performances at State Permit events.  These include Zone and Region, as well as Treloar Shield, High Velocity, NSW Country and other eligible competitions.  For more details, see the NSW Athletics Pathway Entry Regulations.

Athletes in the 16s to Under 20 age groups can also compete at Zone, but as they can enter the State Championships directly, participation isn't necessary for qualification.

Zone (and Region) Championships are entirely run by the participating clubs. The number of entrants determines how many helpers each club must supply, so if you're competing, please be prepared to lend a hand with running the events!

2027 Championship Announcements

The final major event of the season has been announced, with the 2027 Australian Junior Championships taking place in Brisbane from April 13-18.

If this is the ultimate competitive target for you, make sure you're across all of the info on the NSW State Teams page on the NSW Athletics website so you know what's required and can plan accordingly.

Committee Vacancies

A couple of members have stepped down from the Committee, so we're looking for people to fill two roles:

  • Media Officer– liaise with external media organisations to share the successes and achievements of our members.

  • Wednesday Meet Coordinator – coordinate setting up the equipment for our Wednesday meets and making sure everything is packed away at the end of the night.

If you're able to help out with either role, please email athleticswollongong@gmail.com.  Note that you must be aged 18 or over and hold, or be willing to obtain, a Working With Children Check.

Grill'd Wollongong Local Matters

During November, the Wollongong Grill'd restaurant (corner of Crown and Keira Streets in Gateway Shopping Centre) will be featuring an Athletics Wollongong jar as part of its Local Matters campaign.

Every burger sold earns the purchaser a token, which they can place in one of three jars, each representing a local community organisation or charity. At the end of the month, the organisation with the most tokens receives $300, while the other two each receive $100.  Everyone wins!

Ordering online? You can vote for AW too – just click the appropriate link in your email receipt.

You can check out the Grill'd menu and order online here: https://grilld.com.au/restaurants/new-south-wales/wollongong

Tell your friends and family, support AW, and treat yourself to a tasty burger this November!
