Athletics Wollongong weekly Wednesday meets set to begin!

Athletics Wollongong returns for Season 2025/26 on Wednesday, 24th September.  Note that there will be no competition held on this evening, though you might also choose to bring your gear along and have a run-through on your own.

Returning members are welcome to attend for a catch-up or to purchase a new uniform, but this is mostly an opportunity for newbies: if you're curious, anxious or otherwise unsure of yourself, come along to get an idea of how it all works - without club admin and officials having their time and attention divided by events being held at the same time.

We'll have a walk and talk, covering a basic intro to the facility, the procedures on our club nights, and some notes on safety and the conduct of events.  This will commence at our regular start time of 5:30pm and your attendance is a great way to ensure you get the most value from your club membership.

You'll have a week to digest the above before we return to social competition on October 1st with our first Come & Try.  Across two warm-up weeks we will move at a slower pace through a subset of events, allowing time for some instruction and to work out any kinks before the first round of pointscore on October 15th.

The entire schedule of events to be held this season is on the Competition page:

Note that each time you attend the track, entry will have to be paid at the front counter - including for "spectators" (aka parents assisting at field events).

To participate in track and field, you'll need a 2025/26 membership. Join Athletics Wollongong HERE.

Save money!

Members will be glad to hear that here have been no price increases to Athletics Wollongong memberships this season.

Did you know about these other money-saving tips?

  • Active and Creative Kids Vouchers - School students may use $50/$100 of Active and Creative Kids Vouchers to help pay registration fees. Obtain your Active Kids Voucher number before signing up and then enter it during the registration process.
  • Family Discount - Three or more in your family to register with Athletics Wollongong?  You will get $10 off the price of each membership.  See the Registration page for futher details before you sign up.
  • Uni Student Discount - Never joined AW before and are attending the University of Wollongong?  Contact us for a code to take $40 off competitive memberships.
  • Multi Club Membership - Already a member of another NSW Athletics-affiliated club or Little Athletics Centre?  You can still join in all the fun at Athletics Wollongong without needing to purchase another full-priced membership.  A Multi Club Membership with AW will only cost $40, saving up to $140.  See the Registration page for futher details before you sign up.
  • Upgrading your membership - It can be a smart idea to initially join up as a Community member and only upgrade your membership to a higher level as you need to.  While your competitive aims may be loftier than AW's own meets (where a Community membership will suffice) there's always the chance of injury or other commitments getting in the way come Championships (for which you'll need a higher-level membership).  As there's no additional cost to upgrade, it's basically some free insurance.
  • No uniform required - you don't need to purchase a uniform to participate at our club meets, just wear whatever's comfortable.  It's only when you represent the club at higher-level events that you need to buy a top.
  • Track Entry Discount - planning on regularly attending AW's Wednesday meets?  You can buy a 25-visit track entry pass at the Leisure Centre front counter to cover our entire season and save 10%.
  • Family Track Entry - two adult and two concession track entries come at a discount when purchasing a Family Track pass.
  • Monthly Track Pass - attending the track at times other than our Wednesday meets?  You can purchase a monthly track pass and be ahead if you're there as little as three times per fortnight.
  • Leisure Centre Membership - using the gym or taking a class in addition to running with AW each week?  You're throwing money away if you don't have a Leisure Centre Membership!  The more you use the facilities at Beaton Park - and/or Lakeside - the more you save.

Athletics Wollongong at the World Athletics Championships

Last newsletter, AW's Delta Amidzovski was anxiously waiting on dropouts and injuries to bump herself up the rankings and qualify for the World Athletics Championships.  It was a close-run thing, having initially been told that she had missed out by one spot.  She was awakened the following morning though by a welcome phone call, just ahead of the final Australian team announcement: she had made the cut!

Tokyo's World Champs marked Delta's senior international debut, with the event featuring the biggest of track and field stars.  The long jump qualification was held alongside the 100m and pole vault early rounds: Mondo Duplantis, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Noah Lyles were sharing the stage with our own Delta Amidzovski!

Delta jumped 6.28m, finishing 27th of the 34 competitors. That was well ahead of where her world ranking said she should finish, so on that count - and as a development opportunity - the competition was a real success.  With a view to the future: the last qualifier for the final jumped 6.60m - not far off at all!

It had been over 15 years since our last member contested the World Athletics Championships (High Jumper Petrina Price at that World Champs in Berlin).  It's not likely to be as long a wait until the next time!

More records for our club members to break!

Performances at events like the above aren't captured by the existing club records, which only cover results from our Wednesday meets.  The club records will continue to be documented in this fashion - for all ages - but, in addition, we will also be tracking the best performances on record.  These are open-age efforts by Athletics Wollongong members at any event.

As many of our members have their focus on external Championships, we hope that these 'Best on Record' performances will prove as inspiring as the club records are for those contesting Wednesdays.

Note that the Committee will be final arbiters on whether a performance will count.  (Sorry, your mates holding a stopwatch for you down the footy oval won't cut it!).  We may also need some help in being alerted of valid performances, in case they're made at less-expected competitions.

Finally, while we've delved deep into the archives, there's always a chance we missed some worthy marks.  If you have evidence of a performance that deserves the top spot, please let us know.

Oceania Masters Championships

Six Athletics Wollongong members contested the Oceania Masters Championships in Brisbane earlier this month.  There were medals galore, with Oceania records also going to Rebekah Power (W45-49 400m) and Christine Shaw (W65-69 High Jump).  Full results are available HERE.

Australian Cross Country Championships Results

Congrats to our reps at last month's Australian Cross Country Championships: Axel Comer, Cristine Suffolk, Lincoln Gorrie, and Xavier Wilson.  Ballarat proved an especially happy hunting ground for Cristine, as she took out the W55-59 event.  Full results are available HERE.

AW's Winter Distance Pointscore Results

AW's 2025 Winter Distance Running Pointscore has been run and won.

The winner for the highest average age-graded % in the Opens was Scott Bazley with 67%, followed by David Comer and Ros Perry.  In the Juniors division, the winner was Bronte Vermey with 68%, followed by Seattle Bazley and EJ McHenry.

The most improved in the seniors was Cath Chisholm, with a whopping 9% improvement on her 2024 average.  In the juniors it was EJ McHenry, who also managed two PBs in his last two events.

Des Comer completed the most parkruns with 17, closely followed by Scott Bazley with 16.

Awards will be presented to our winners at the first Wednesday pointscore meet.

Committee Vacancies

We are very keen to have a chat with anyone who can fill the remaining open positions on the Committee.  Note that we don't need you to have amazing qualifications, we're just after people that want to work towards the best possible outcomes for the club and its members.

  • Secretary - you'll need to be able to attend most monthly Committee meetings, held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7pm 'til 8:30pm or so at the Tennis Club.  The main duties are to send the agenda out beforehand and then the meeting minutes afterwards.
  • Publicity Officer - promote the club and the feats of its members; particularly to external entities.
  • Development Officer - the required duty is to ensure an accurate record is kept of coach affiliations and qualifications.  Apart from that: encourage the development of coaches, officials, helpers, and so on.

Some of the tasks within the roles are nice-to-haves, but others are definite must-dos.  Without people in these roles, those already on the Committee will have to spread themselves even thinner to ensure that the must-do's happen.

If you have some time to donate, please consider lending your club some assistance.

Donate to Athletics Wollongong

If you can't donate your time, perhaps you can donate your money!  This season, all clubs have been encouraged to set up a portal on the fundraising website provided by the the Australian Sports Foundation.  If you support our mission and would like to assist us in reaching our goals, please feel free to make a donation.  Thank you to those who have already donated!

Athletics Wollongong Hoodie

There's still time to purchase an Athletics Wollongong hoodie.  We have sizes available from Junior 14 through to 3XL.  Buy a hoodie HERE or see us on a club night.

External Competitions

As can be seen in the listing below, competition is about to really kick off.  All of these events - and more - can be seen via the NSW Athletics calendar.  Note that you will need the appropriate membership type to enter each event:

  • Community - only allows you to contest club competitions, like Athletics Wollongong's meets
  • Junior, Open & Concession - gives eligibility to contest all events, subject to entry conditions (e.g. NSW Country Champs are for 9's+, Treloar/High Velocity/Milers/All-comers are for 10's+, Little Athletics Zone/Region/State are for 13's+, Masters Champs for 30's+)
  • Multi-membership - as per above, but you can represent any of your clubs

The Treloar Shield rules for this season have been released, and many are already strategising on how best to make the final. The more people who enter, the more likely that will be — so join in and encourage your clubmates to do so as well!
