2025/26 Registrations are now open
It's not too late to sign up for Season 2025/26!
To join us, simply go to the Registration page on the club website.
Note that 2024/25 memberships have now expired. You'll need to renew to be a part of the 2025/26 season.
Athletics Wollongong Pointscore Competition has begun!
After a few warm-up meets to shake off the off-season rust, AW’s pointscore competition is now underway!
To encourage regular participation across all events, athletes earn points based on their finishing position within their age group. These points accumulate over our Wednesday meets, with trophies awarded to the top scorers at season’s end.
(And remember — these aren’t the only awards up for grabs! Others recognise improvement, record-breaking performances, standout efforts, and clubpersonship).
The entire schedule of events to be held this season is on the Competition page:Note that the best source of information about each Wednesday’s program is the Facebook post made to the Athletics Wollongong group on the preceding Sunday. (It’s also posted on the noticeboard outside the track office on the night). We're currently having to make some changes to the scheduling of field events.
We’ve been pleasantly surprised — if a little caught off-guard — by a flurry of late registrations. This has meant that the age divisions we originally planned are now slightly uneven. As our evenings run more smoothly (and are more fun!) with similarly-sized age groupings, we’ll be making a few adjustments until things balance out.
It’s a bit of a juggling act, as some field events can’t be held simultaneously or must take place in specific areas. So, you might find yourself repeating a field event before you’ve cycled through them all. Please be patient — everyone will get the chance to contest every event, and as often as possible, over the course of the season.
Run Havoc Sponsorship
Athletics Wollongong are happy to welcome to the family Run Havoc, the local destination for all things running. You'll find them in Wollongong's lower mall - where AW members can receive a 5% discount - or online HERE. If you're looking for shoes, running gear or nutrition, then check out Run Havoc.
Their support of the club also includes giveaways of $100 vouchers at our pointscore meets. Each month we will be giving away one voucher for participation and one for achievement.
The participation voucher will be awarded by lucky draw. All you need to do to gain entries in the draw is to enter a programmed event on a Wednesday. The more weeks you attend - and the more events you participate in - the more entries you gain and the better your chances of winning. The first draw is for participation in Week 1 (15th October) through Week 3 (29th October).
The monthly achievement voucher will be awarded by performance in a nominated event. This month's event is the 800m being held in Week 2 (22nd October). Note that it's not the fastest time across the line, but the best age-graded performance. This gives an opportunity for even more members to take out the win. We'll be mixing up the chosen event in coming months; also including handicapped races so that everyone has a chance to earn a voucher with a great effort.
React Facility Services Sponsorship
The good news doesn’t stop there — React Facility Services has also joined us as a bronze-level sponsor, contributing an extra $1,000 this season to enhance our athletes’ membership experience.
React are proud advocates for sport in our region, sponsoring leading organisations including the Dragons and Hawks. Their support of AW also aligns perfectly with their existing involvement in the Wollongong Running Festival.
Their range of services includes:
- Cleaning (residential, end-of-lease and commercial)
- Maintenance & Handyman Services
- Lawns & Landscaping
- Demolition Labour
They’ll also be getting a weekly shoutout on Facebook as we post our Wednesday meet standings — now called the ‘Athletics Wollongong React Results’!
Treloar Shield
In addition to Athletics Wollongong's weekly meets, there are a wide variety of competitions held on the weekends. You can find these listed on the event calendar at the NSW Athletics website.
The main focus for athletes at this stage of the season is the Treloar Shield, a club-based pointscore competition. It's held over six rounds before culminating in a final limited to the top clubs.
Athletics Wollongong has got off to a good start, particularly in the Masters divisions. Last season our club finished on the medal dais in the 50+ class, this year they're driven to be on top of it.
As the Sydney Olympic Park track is resurfaced, NSW Athletics is trialling taking the event to multiple venues each round. While the program is duplicated across tracks (for the most part) and athletes are welcome to contest either, we've chosen to nominate a 'preferred' venue - just to ensure the greatest support from the AW cheer squad:
Note that there may be entrant caps to better encourage even numbers across venues. Members are encouraged to enter early, lest they be forced to go to the alternate track to participate (particularly relevant in Round 3, where the other venue is Mingara, on the central cost).
New this season: helpers can earn points for their club as well! Each of the above links for the Round will include a Volunteer Sign Up button, where you can specify which event you'd like to assist the accredited officials at. For each volunter, 5 points will be awarded in every age group the club competes in in that round (up to a max of 20). It could be those points that help AW qualify for the final!
NSW Relay Championships
One of the largest events on the NSW Athletics calendar are the Relay Championships. This season it will again be held across two weekends, with the first weekend for those in the 8's to 12's and the second (November 14th - 16th) to feature teams in the 13's to Masters.
Note that you need to be an Open, Concession, Junior or Multi-Club member in order to contest the event. Our members in the 8's to 11's are also unable to represent AW here, being limited to the Little Athletics pathway in this instance. Those in the 12's can look to that pathway also, but can nominate for an Athletics Wollongong team in the 13's as well.
Club teams are selected from those who submit an Expression of Interest form. Note that if you do not submit a form, the presumption is that you're not available - not that you're waiting to be asked.
The Expression of Interest form is currently open, with nominations closing November 2nd. Before entering your details in the form, please read the news article about the relays for more information first.
As noted there, you are most likely to form a team if you advocate and advertise to those whom you would like to be in a team with!
Some of the Committee have graciously volunteered to coordinate teams from the EOIs submitted. Their hope is that every eligible applicant will be able to participate, but that may not be possible due to the number or type of nominations received.
The club is responsible for submitting entries and will pay the required registration fees ($45/team).
The nomination form is also open to volunteers who can help with delivery of the event. In previous seasons, each club has had to supply an official for every 4 teams submitted. A shift typically lasts 3 hours or so and duties will be similar to those you'd expect at our own Wednesday meets: returning implements, raking pits, etc. Particularly if you'll be up there anyway, we encourage you to put your name forward.
While the relays themselves are a lot of fun, the organisation can be painful at times. Please only submit a nomination if there's no forseeable chance of you dropping out afterwards - and if you won't mind knowing that you've made a team only a week or so out from the event.
Zone Championships
We'll be opening up entries for the Zone Championships shortly. Some junior athletes intending to go to State, will have to qualify via this event - and then via Region. Both Zone and Region Championships will be held at our home track this season.
If you are in the 12's or under, you can only contest these Championships via a Little Athletics Membership.
If you are in the 13's, 14's or 15's (and have a 'Junior' membership), one avenue to State is via this event: finish top 3 at Zone and you qualify for the next level. You can also make it to State as one of the 'next best qualifiers'. Of all the performances from our region at 'State Permit' events (like Zone and Region, but also Treloar, High Velocity, etc), the next best - from those who haven't qualified via placings at Zone/Region - will win through.
If you are in the 16's to Under 20, you can elect to participate in these events but, as you can enter State Championships directly, you don't need to attend.
More detailed information regarding pathway progressions for our Junior members is HERE.
Committee Vacancies
We are very keen to have a chat with anyone who can fill the remaining open positions on the Committee. Note that we don't need you to have amazing qualifications, we're just after people that want to work towards the best possible outcomes for the club and its members.
- Secretary - you'll need to be able to attend most monthly Committee meetings, held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7pm 'til 8:30pm or so at the Tennis Club. The main duties are to send the agenda out beforehand and then the meeting minutes afterwards.
- Publicity Officer - promote the club and the feats of its members; particularly to external entities.
- Development Officer - the required duty is to ensure an accurate record is kept of coach affiliations and qualifications. Apart from that: encourage the development of coaches, officials, helpers, and so on.
Some of the tasks within the roles are nice-to-haves, but others are definite must-dos. Without people in these roles, those already on the Committee will have to spread themselves even thinner to ensure that the must-do's happen.
If you have some time to donate, please consider lending your club some assistance.
Donate to Athletics Wollongong
If you can't donate your time, perhaps you can donate your money! This season, all clubs have been encouraged to set up a portal on the fundraising website provided by the the Australian Sports Foundation. If you support our mission and would like to assist us in reaching our goals, please feel free to make a donation. Thank you to those who have already donated!
