Annual General Meeting
As an incorporated body, Athletics Wollongong must hold an Annual General Meeting. This is where financials are presented to members and elections are held for Committee roles and support positions for the following year. Our AGM will be held on Tuesday, 8th July, from 7pm - ahead of the monthly Committee Meeting - at our regular venue of the Wollongong Tennis Club boardroom.
In case you're feeling a sense of deja vu: yes, the AGM was previously announced on a different date. Unfortunately, there was an error included in the official notice to members regarding the meeting and it only came to our attention too late to correct it (there are rules regarding how much notice you need to give). Consequently, we retracted the initial notice and have since sent out an updated notice with the new date.
If anything, it demonstrates that while well-intentioned, your Committee aren't infallible: perhaps this gives you further encouragement to jump on board!
Members are welcome to nominate for any role, but - in case you're looking for some direction - we can report which positions didn't receive any written nominations ahead of the initial date:
Here are the Position Descriptions for roles on the Management Committee and Support Team. Further details regarding the meeting and processes are available in the Official Notice sent out on 10th June (to the email address you registered with). Hope to see you there!
Athletics Wollongong's Winter Pointscore
AW's Winter Distance Running Pointscore is approaching its halfway point!
As per recent seasons, our program is held alongside the parkrun series of events. Parkruns are free 5km races, held all over the world on Saturday mornings from 8am. Local parkruns are held at North Wollongong, Sandon Point, Killalea, Bowral, Picton, and Helensburgh. You can choose to run at whichever is most convenient to you.
All performances are given an 'Age Graded Percentage'. At least six of these must be attained during the competition window of May through to the end of August to be eligible for awards. Winners are determined by the highest average score among participants' top-six performances.
To assist with administration of our pointscore, participants should specify 'Athletics Wollongong' as their associated group on their parkrun profile. You can set up your parkrun profile HERE and read more about our Winter Pointscore HERE.
Record-breaking runs aren't the only way to be a great representative of Athletics Wollongong: we will be doing a 'takeover' of the North Wollongong parkrun in September - and we encourage you to be a part of it! We'll be providing all officials for one of the runs, partly as a thank you to the community but also as a promo for the upcoming track and field season. More details to come.
Taiwan Athletics Open
Athletics Wollongong members have been in action further afield, including Delta Amidzovski, as she participated in the Taiwan Athletics Open. This event was used as a development opportunity by several countries, with Australia sending an U23 team.
Delta contested both the 100m Hurdles and Long Jump. She took out the latter with a leap of 6.49m, while running a new PB of 13.25s over the senior height in the hurdles, finishing in 5th spot.
Up next for her are the World Universities Games in Germany in a month's time!
Masters Games
Heading north in May were Athletics Wollongong members Caroline Ellis and Cristine Suffolk, who contested the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in Cairns. They cleaned up! Cristine came home with five gold medals, while Caroline claimed 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.
There's growing interest in some of the upcoming Masters events among our members, with Canberra's Australian Masters Games in late October proving particularly appealing. Soon after that one will be the Oceania Athletics Masters Cup, to be held in Tonga.
New NSW Masters President
In other Masters athletics news, a familiar face was elected President of the NSW Masters Athletics Association this past weekend. Congratulations to Donna Hiscox on her new role!
NSW Cross Country Championships Review
The NSW Cross Country Championships were held last Saturday, with several AW members braving the hills of Willandra.
Congrats to AW's Xavier Wilson, who took the win in the 13's & 14's Para category. Also earning medals - but representing their 'other' clubs - were Emma O'Sullivan (1st 50-54 as Run Crew), Cristine Suffolk (1st 55-59 as Victory Runners) and Andrew MacPherson (3rd 55-59 as St George).
Full results of AW members are available HERE.
Even closer to home will be the upcoming NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships. They'll be held at West Dapto in a couple of weeks. See the event listing for more details.
Australian All Schools
Looking much farther ahead, the venue for the 2025 Australian All School Championships has been announced: Melbourne, in early December.
The NSW edition will come first, of course, with it scheduled for September 27th-30th. The info on how to progress to National All Schools this year isn't available as yet, but will likely not vary significantly from last year's.
If representing your State at National All Schools is your aim, then 2025 might be a good year for it: the 2026 running will be in Perth!
Hoodie Weather
Cooler conditions are certainly in effect, which makes it a perfect time to treat yourself to an Athletics Wollongong hoodie from our online store. We have sizes available from Junior 14 through to 3XL. Buy a hoodie HERE.
Coming Dates
And don't forget AW's Winter Distance Running Pointscore, held each Saturday morning - until the end of August - at your local parkrun.
