It's been an exciting few weeks for Athletics Wollongong, with no fewer than five club members either representing Australia or preparing to do so on the international stage. Seeing our athletes compete in the green and gold is always a proud moment for the club, and their achievements are a testament to the dedication, perseverance and countless hours of hard work they've invested over many years.
At the Commonwealth Games, Delta Amidzovski came within the narrowest of margins of claiming a medal in the Women's Long Jump. Delta produced another outstanding series of jumps, finishing fourth with a distance just shy of her personal best. It was a performance that confirmed she belongs among the very best jumpers in the Commonwealth and one that everyone at Athletics Wollongong thoroughly enjoyed following.
Distance runner Olivia Sivills has also been wearing the Australian colours, selected in an Athletics Australia development team to contest the New Zealand Cross Country Championships. The program provides promising youth athletes with valuable international racing experience, and Olivia certainly made the most of the opportunity. She placed sixth in the Senior Women's race and returned home with a bronze medal from the team event.
Our attention now turns to Eugene, Oregon, where Chase Grant, Chelsy Wayne and Maiya Hewitt are about to commence their campaigns at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships. Chase will contest the 400m and 4×400m relay, Maiya the 400m hurdles, and Chelsy the discus. We know the entire Athletics Wollongong community will be following their performances closely and cheering them on from afar through the 7Plus coverage.
To have five athletes representing Australia in such a short period is something our entire club can celebrate. Their success is inspiring for our athletes, rewarding for the coaches, families and volunteers who have supported them along the way, and a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved through commitment to our sport.
